Pilgrims provides the visitor with a wonderful place to relax and recharge. Within Pilgrims we have games and toys and of course the indoor swimming pool, spa and gym.

However, if you’re feeling more active, there is much to explore in Norfolk – 90 miles of coastline, the Broads National Park and many cozy pubs and restaurants.

Below is a list of recommendations close to the cottages, and a little further afield:

Bacton beach is a 2-minute stroll down the lane, and Mundesley beach is also nice for families and has lifeguards in the summer months.

Sea Palling, Waxham, and Horsey are great for quiet walks and seal watching and all within a short drive from the cottages.

Further afield, you could try crabbing on the Cromer pier or have an old-fashioned day beside the seaside at Great Yarmouth Pleasure Beach.

Woods and Walks

Bacton Wood (also known as Witton Woods) is a short distance by car or on bike/foot via the quiet lanes. The wood has over thirty species of trees, and walking trails that suit everyone.

Other walks and cycling routes available locally include the Bacton Circular Walk, the Bacton Heritage Walk or the Paston Heritage Walk.

The Broads are easily accessible to the cottages via Stalham or Wroxham. We recommend Richardsons for boat hire, who have marinas in both locations, and Broads Tours.

Tire the kids out in the trees at BeWILDerwood, pet the farm animals at Wroxham Barns, and rainy days can be enjoyed at Stompers in North Walsham, or at Amazona zoo or the Regal cinema in Cromer.

Happisburgh (pronounced Haze-Bur-Uh) Lighthouse is the oldest working Light in East Anglia – the open days get booked quickly, so please check the website before you visit.

We are lucky to have some gems nearby for train buffs – The Poppy Line steam trains can be boarded from Sheringham and Holt, and the Bure Valley railway features narrow gauge steam trains running between Aylsham and Wroxham.

History can be lived in many local stately homes and castlesBlickling Hall is a stunning example of Jacobean architecture, with 55 acres of formal gardens and many open-air events throughout the summer.

Local Pubs

The Poachers Pocket is a 10-minute walk from the cottages (or a 15-minute stroll along the beach) and has views on to Walcott Beach. The Lighthouse Inn is a little further down the road and another family friendly option.

A little further afield we can recommend The Ship Inn Mundesley for a Sunday roast, The Bridge Inn at Acle for a riverside pint, and The Recruiting Sergeant near Coltishall has an excellent beer garden.

Gastro Pubs, Restaurants & Takeaways

The food scene in North Norfolk is thriving, thanks to excellent locally sourced ingredients, innovative chefs and beautiful locations. Make sure to book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Some of our favourites include The Ingham Swan for award winning fine dining in an intimate setting, The Gunton Arms for fantastic steaks, deer petting and art spotting, The Red Lion in Cromer, and – a little further afield but highly recommended, Rocky Bottoms in West Runton is an actual seafood heaven.

A short walk along the Coast road leads you to Oriental Garden Chinese Restaurant (cash only) plus Village Kebab and Pizza House. Plus, you can always pop to our lovely neighbour  Cafe Carmel for tasty vegan snacks.

We didn’t forget Fish & Chips! Bacton Fish and chip shop is a short walk from the cottages, and the sea front at Walcott there is also King Fisher. For something a little bit special, head to No.1 Cromer (and its sister restaurant, No.1 Upstairs), Galton Blackiston’s take on the seaside classic.

Shops & Markets

Market day in North Walsham is on Thursday, and the Farmers market is the last Sunday of every month. North Walsham is also home to Papworth’s Butchers shop.

Great local shellfish and hot smoked salmon can be bought at Fair Maiden Shellfish, down the road from us in Happisburgh.

A short walk away on the Coast road is Super Stores (known locally as Billy’s).There is a small convenience store along the seafront at Walcott. North Walsham has a Sainsburys, Lidl and a Waitrose.

Department Stores

We have two local (ish) department stores – Roys of Wroxham, and Jarrold in Norwich and Cromer.  Norwich is also home to a great range of independent shops and galleries, and all the usual high street brands.

The cottages all feature tourist information and offers in the Information Boxes, and you can always contact us for more details.
